Next term: April 3, 24 May 1, 8, 15, 22, Thank you for the wonderful term! It's such a blast working with you all, Check out the recordings of Oh Susanna from this week! I've created a very rough version of Ya Khotiv so you can hear how the new part fits in, time is best spent learning the melody, harmony and working on getting the groove solid. There is even a video tutorial on the strum/groove pattern!
Small ensemblesI've put together a contact list for the small ensembles and resources below. We'll sort out some practice times once I get back but it would be awesome if you guys could learn the bones of the tunes/refresh before I get back. Maybe get a few people together and run through them?
Feb 13th Folkharmonic is happening! see you there!
Hey Folks, here are the driving directions for Oh Susanna, I will be going over the short hand, terminology, and how these work in class tomorrow. I will also bring sheets for you to fill in for yourselves so that you can add, edit or clarify them to make sense for you. below the road maps are some resources for sweet island home, and then a video of a stupidly talented child playing with far too much ease and stage presence. accompanied by a Russian folk orchestra. My goal is to someday be the old man in the front in a white coat, conducting by rotating my wrists. Sweet Island home
Well Folks, that was an awesome start to the term. I hope to see you all this week and we can continue building arrangements for our tunes. Interesting Fact of the week: If you are having a hard time tuning or hitting a note, stop and listen. Your home may be pulling you out of tune. This week I discovered that both my Dryer & the bathroom fans in my house hum somewhere between Bb and B when they are running. Which is why after 10 tries I still couldn't sing Oh Susanna in tune. I was pulling my hair out, I thought I was going crazy. I spent hours going over it again and again trying to figure it out. Turns out it wasn't all my fault, it was just second hand music. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1997/04/secondhand-music/376828/ Resources for this week. An updated Mp3 track for Oh Susanna (Sans dryer hum)

Hello Folkquestrians
I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season. FolkHarmonic will be starting again on Wednesday January 16that the Dove Creek Hall. FolkHarmonic Voices – 6:15-7:25 FolkHarmonic Orchestra – 7:30-9:15 Term 3: (8 classes) January 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13, 20, 27 March 6, Term 4: (6 classes) April 3, 24, May 1, 8, 15, 22 May 25th weekend: Due to NIFPA cancelling its fiddle program this year I have hired Miriam Sonstenes & Jeff Dill from Victoria to put on our own mini festival May 25/26th 2019. This will consist of workshops for folkharmonic and solo masterclasses in both classical and fiddle genres. I will have more information on this at the first class of 2019. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know (email is best, although I may not reply right away as I will be out of wifi/cell range while at Mount Cain) All the best, Ali
Bring it on down Ukulele instrumentalHello all, Just a reminder that as the weather gets muddy we'll be transitioning to no shoes in the hall, so bring a pair of slippers to keep your feet warm. FolkHarmonic Voices is open to any and all who would like to attend/drop in. The resources page for that group has the same password (why complicate things right?) so if you'd like to check out what we've been working on just head to the resource page in the venue bar. I've been very impressed with your improvising for Coupe de Ville! its sounding really great. here are some videos that you can either play along with or 'lift' ideas from... remember learning other folks solos is one of the greatest forms of flattery in music. It means they've had ideas worth stealing! (we call it lifting if its from an improvised solo or quoting if its from the melody or recognizable head of the tune) The first one is NOT in the key of G! so you may have to transpose your riffs, but it has some cool ideas, same with the other instructional videos
