Thank you to everyone who attended Folk Harmonic Last night! And a big thanks to Amanda, Bob & Wendy for helping keep things rolling once all of the layers were added in. We reviewed the parts for Real Midnight at the start of class, I've broken the score apart so that there is one with just vocals/harmonies. be warned that the rhythms are approximate, things change slightly in each verse. When you're practicing take a listen to the original and see if you can find 3 different spots where things change. We'll highlight those together next week and figure out what we want to do with each one. Birds of Chicago at the CUMBERLAND HOTEL OCT 5thReal Midnight - Parts![]()
There are only 3 chords in this tune (in this arrangement) one of which only gets played twice. Guitars: Capo at 3rd fret, Play G & C shapes... the 'odd' chord is D Everyone else: Bb & Eb... the odd chord is F
Ain't no Fun to be Alone in San Antone - Gene WatsonSince its hard to get your hands on a copy of this tune I've grabbed the audio off of a youtube video to share with y'all. Buy Gene Watson on amazon over $100??? for the CD? nope! Check out the charts below, and take a look at the sheet music if you get a chance, it may help you place the melody even if you don't read music. the original recording is in the Key of Bb, I will try to do a recording in G for you in the next couple days. When you are looking at the box chart IGNORE THE GREY CHORDS!!!! I have particular shapes in mind, and we will go over them in class together. ![]()

Wow! What an amazing turn out of awesome people this week. Thank you all for your patience and spacial awareness in the lounge last night, I know that it was a bit close quarters. We are going to stick with the Barn Lounge for at least a few more weeks to see if we can make the space work, if it seems ridiculous find an alternate space. If it was your first time at Folk Harmonic I hope the experience wasn't too over whelming. It can take a while to get used to learning and playing in such a large group. But from what I could see everyone was doing well. If you ever have concerns or are feeling over your head or lost, please let me know at the break or send me an email ([email protected]) The more feedback I get on my teaching the easier it is for me to make Folk Harmonic an inclusive space for all. If you are a returning Folkquestrian, take a note of the new faces and introduce yourself at the break. Remember the first few classes you came to and how it felt. The whole point of this group is to create musical community, one that extends beyond Tuesdays at 7:30! If you missed this first class, take a listen through the tracks below and print out the lyrics and any other resources that might help you... We'll review things in class next week, but will be moving on to the finer details and arrangement as well. Real Midnight - Lyrics in isolation can tell different storiesTake a read through the whole song, look at the big picture, look at one verse, the chorus etc. If you just heard the chorus on its own what would you think the song is about (as many VIMW'ers did) If you just heard the 1st verse? the 2nd? the 3rd? Now as a whole, what does the song mean to you? which meaning do you like the best/makes it easier for you to sing? The Mp3 provided here is really rough, but should help isolate the parts. I would suggest listening to the original, its available on iTunes, but if you want to support the artists not the Big Corporation you can click on the button below go to Birds Of Chicago Website and buy a download or CD there. Or you can listen on youtube, there are 2 videos posted below as well. The recorded and live versions.
Well Folks, Its been a blast, we've got one more class (May 3th) left before summer chaos breaks loose (Yes, I am aware that it is only May, but the season of Chaos is starting early this year) I know that I had originally said the term would go till May 10th, but I'll be reallllllly far away and don't own a teleporter to get me home for that class. So, Here is the up dated theory booklet... no new additions other than last weeks page. (for those of you who missed class, we didn't do theory this week) ![]()
If you are interested in what choral scores look like, or just want to explore some beautiful choral works here are a few videos to check out:
Hey Folksies, Heres an Mp3 of Pallet, melody and some harmony ideas. We're going to continue writing the harmonies in class, so be prepared to put your thinking caps on for a bit next week. This is a really important (and rewarding) skill to have in your tool kit. I know that it can seem really daunting and a bit like magic, but I promise we'll go slow. IF you don't want to learn how to create a harmony, sit back, and watch the process... There are others who have expressed a keen interest in working on this together, so we'll be spending some time on it next class, and who knows, you may just learn it by osmosis. We'll also be looking at how '7' chords are built, and I'll be fixing a typo in the big table of intervals (don't worry, its not something that has anything to do with anything we've done so far... thank you Sue and Bonnie for pointing it out). If you've missed the last few classes take a look at the basic theory workbook below, but don't worry if it doesn't make too much sense. I'll get you up to speed in class.
I'm working on a crash course in note reading, hopefully I'll have it up on the site by Sunday. The last thing I want to do is rush it and make the process more confusing than it already is.
cheerios a Hey Everyone, Spring has sprung, and we are now heading into the final FolkHarmonic Term before summer Apr 5, 12, 19, 26 May 3, 10 Next week (April 5th) I'm going to take a bit of time to try to explain a little bit about how chords are formed (without terrifying or confusing you too much). I've put together recordings for Swing 48 and Dark Eyes, you'll see them below.
Dark Eyes, so many was to sing it & Swing it! Pearl Django's version (Bottom Left) starts with waltz time and then switches to swing after a couple times through,
Some weeks I love computers, some weeks I don't. some weeks computers love me, some weeks they are maniacal beings out to ruin any kind of productivity. so, here are the files I've been promising you for weeks. a backing track for Ya Khotiv, charts for Swing 48 and Dark Eyes.
Wow! You all knocked my socks off last night. These are tough harmonies. The recordings I've posted here have a few wobbly notes, but should still help you figure out the parts if you use the music/score as well.
Next week we'll work on arranging My Old Timey baby, with the key change as well as some improvising on Ya Khotiv Bi...
Hey Folks! If you're reading this congratulations! you've by-passed the security on this site! This week we looked at getting the melody consistent so that when we add in the Lickettes harmonies we'll have a solid base on which to build. For the key of A I ended up singing this mostly in the high octave, but switched certain parts down the octave since I was unable to consistently tune or hit the highest note. It was also super squeaky. Just be aware (gents) that there are times where I'm dropping down for "alright with me" "the world can see" etc.
The Key of D: After singing through in this key, I realized that there are parts that are pretty low in my range, if you're having a hard time hitting the lower notes, pretend you are speaking them. this will help your voice box stay neutral when singing.
Gaucho - Recordings & ChartsGaucho was the main tune that Wendy & Bob led while I was away galavanting in Germany... I just found the recordings & Charts that Wendy put together, so here they are!
Ya Khotiv Biwe're going to be bringing back some older repertoire over the next while, using the second half of class to polish, review and relearn tunes from previous terms. If you're new to Folk Harmonic, don't worry, you'll have plenty of opportunity to catch up, and many of the mp3s, charts and exercises are posted on this blog. Just scroll down through the older posts or search for specific songs in the search bar and you'll find lots of things to help you learn these tunes. There isn't an Mp3 of this one yet, I'll put one together if it seems necessary down the road. Getting the Groove solid, and concise is really important in this one.
Guitar players: here's a video I made back when we were first learning this in January of 2015... both grooves are present, just be aware that the "A Part Groove" happens throughout the A sections (First 16 bars) and the Oom Pah pay Room Pahs happen during the B part (bars 17-25) Have Fun! see you next week! - a
My Old Timey Baby, in the Key of D is much more friendly for female voices. We're going to be arranging this tune in a way that will feature both male and female vocals, as well as the tight Lickettes style harmonies on the recording. Be warned that we will be doing an on-the-fly-key change in this one from A to D so practicing the tune in both keys is important.
